Second Grade

EMERGENCY cLOSURE iNFORMATION

Dear Families,

The Second Grade Team has compiled activities and resources to help your child maintain their academic growth during this school year. Any gap from the school setting poses a risk of losing what they have gained throughout the school year. We are highly suggesting you try to complete at least one activity from each subject area daily. Everything we have included is something your child has already learned and practiced in the classroom setting. They should be familiar with all lessons and resources. Please treat these materials as if they were coming home in their guided reading packets. If you have any questions, or need support in any way, we will be available via email. Stay healthy!

Queridas familias,

Reading

Your child will be coming home with 5 books that they can read on their own and at a pace you feel is adequate. Upon completion of their book or chapter they will choose a graphic organizer to complete. They may need to read their book more than one time in order to complete all graphic organizers. If for some reason we are unable to give your child the 5 books and you have internet access please have them sign onto Epic, Raz-Kids, or access your home libraries to complete their work.

Si por alguna razón no podemos darle a su hijo los 5 libros y usted tiene acceso a Internet, pídales que se registren en Epic, Raz-Kids o que accedan a las bibliotecas de su hogar para completar su trabajo.

MUSIC SPECIAL

Activity 1: Design and create a musical instrument of your own using found materials (boxes, rubber bands, balloons, etc.) which would normally be discarded into your recycle bin or trash. Find a way to personalize it by decorating it with crayon or stickers! There are some great online resources for making your own instruments at home if your search under “DIY Instruments.”

Activity 2: Explore making musical sounds with your instrument! Depending on which instrument you chose to make, some may be able to make both high and low sounds. These are called pitched instruments. Others, such as certain drums or shakers, will only produce one sound. These are called non-pitched instruments.

On a sheet of paper, please answer the following questions:

1. What is the name of the instrument you created?2. How is a sound made with the instrument? (shaking, plucking, striking or other method)3. Would your instrument be a pitched or non-pitched instrument?4. Write a brief description of the sound it makes. You may use words such as popping, twangy, shaky, deep, breathy, and so on.

Please bring your paper to music class when we return to school so we can discuss your projects in class!

Activity 3: If you have access to any movies at home, listen to one of the songs from the soundtrack as you view the scene. We have discussed many important elements of music throughout the school year such as: Timbre (the unique sound of each instrument or voice), Dynamics (loud and soft volumes), Rhythm (fast or slow speed of the music as well as long or short notes), Pitch (highness or lowness of sound), Texture (how thick or thin the sound is - many instruments/voices or only one or just a few), and Form (the overall "shape" of the music - does it include repetition or a lot of changes?). As you listen and view, think about how the music supports the scene which is taking place. Is there a lot of action involved? Does it help to display an emotion such as love, helplessness, or sorrow? Which of these elements of music help to contribute to the scene? Write down some ways in which these elements were used and think about how the scene would have felt a lot different if these were changed. Would a bright and clear trumpet have created the same effect as a smooth and airy flute given the sounds that they each produce?
